Carpet Cushion
A general rule of thumb for most residential carpet applications is to choose a cushion no more 7/16’’ thick and no less than ¼’’ with at least 6 pounds per cubic feet density. If the carpet is a loop or low profile carpet, choose a cushion no more than 3/8’’ with 8 pounds density.
Why Carpet Cushion?
-
Carpet cushion is a crucial part of your flooring decision. Every step you take creates hundreds of pounds of pressure per square inch. Cushion helps alleviate that pressure. It makes your carpet feel richer, thicker and softer. A firm and resilient carpet cushion is necessary to form a good foundation for your carpet.
-
Cushion improves a carpet’s sound absorption and thermal insulation properties. Quality cushion decreases pile crushing.
-
Dirt can grind your carpet fiber the way sandpaper works. A quality cushion raises the carpet off the subfloor and provides air space underneath allowing the carpet to breathe. This allows for more effective vacuuming.
-
Check the carpet manufacturer’s requirements for thickness and density. Proper cushion is necessary for your carpet warranties. Improper selection of carpet cushion can negatively affect the carpet appearance, cause wrinkling and buckling, cause separation of the carpet seams and can cause a breakdown of the carpet structure itself.
-
To guarantee the best possible wear and life from your carpet, purchase the best quality of padding available for your style of carpet.
